GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored in the fifth round of the shootout and Mike Smith stopped Bobby Ryan to help the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-4 last night. Antoine Vermette, Shane Doan, Matt Stone and Keith Yandle scored for the Coyotes in regulation. Phoenix also beat the Pacific Division-leading Ducks 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Brandon McCarthy pitched three innings in his second start, allowing a home run in the first inning to Zack Cozart, and the Arizona Diamondbacks took advantage of some sloppy Cincinnati play to beat the Reds 7-2. Johnny Cueto (KWAY'-toh) went three innings in his second start for Cincinnati. He slipped in the first inning, causing concern for the Reds because he strained an oblique in the playoffs last season. The Diamondbacks scored four unearned runs on three Reds errors.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Baseball was invented in the U.S. but the World Baseball Classic has been dominated by Japan. U.S. manager Joe Torre has taken a different approach in the WBC's third edition this year. Instead of high-profile stars, he's got a basic starting nine with utility players, three catchers and 15 pitchers filling out the 28-man group. The team went through its only pre-tournament workout yesterday, a light, two-hour session at Salt River Fields, the spring training home of Arizona and Colorado. The U.S. has an exhibition against the Chicago White Sox and Rockies before the opener Friday against Mexico at Chase Field.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The University of Utah is cutting ties with its embattled swim coach Greg Winslow. Athletic director Chris Hill announced yesterday the university won't renew Winslow's contract when it comes up for renewal in June. The school suspended Winslow last week because of allegations that he sexually abused a teenage girl he coached in Arizona. The Arizona State University Police Department says it's investigating allegations that Winslow sexually abused a teenage girl in 2007 who was a member of a swim club he coached. No charges have been filed. Winslow was in his sixth season as the Utes' swim coach.
