WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH)-Post University cross country runner Rob Roman died Friday morning, after collapsing during a meet.

Roman, 20, of Manhattan, collapsed while competing at the Philadelphia Metro Championships in nearby Belmont Plateau, Pa, on September 22. He died Friday at Thomas Jefferson University hospital.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of student-athlete Rob Roman," said Post University President Dr. Tom Samph. "He was surrounded by his family and the thoughts and prayers of the entire Post University community."

"Rob fully encompassed what it meant to be a student-athlete at Post University," said cross country head coach William Ferrare. "He was a leader, and beyond that a tremendous student, athlete and most importantly a great person who was well-liked by everyone he encountered. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time."

The junior was a business administration major at Post. He also played for the junior varsity basketball team.

Roman was named the team's Most Valuable Player by coach Justin Bourne following the 2011-12 season.

"Rob was the most genuine person I have ever had the privilege to be around," Bourne said. "He was such a great young man. Coaches are not supposed to have favorites, but Rob was my favorite. I cannot begin to explain the impact that Rob had on my life as well as all who knew him."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Rob's family during this tragic time," Athletic Director Anthony Fallacaro said.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. However, Post is holding a memorial service for Roman on campus. Details on the service are not yet available.
