WINDSOR, England (AP) -- Britain captured its first gold medal of the London Olympics when Helen Glover and Heather Stanning won the final of the women's pair Wednesday.

Under intense pressure and media expectation, the favorites crossed the line in 7 minutes, 27.13 seconds. Australia took silver, a length back, and New Zealand earned bronze.

It's the first Olympic gold won by a women's British boat and should usher in a medal rush for the host nation at Dorney Lake across the four days of finals.

Glover and Stanning are unbeaten in 2012 and set an Olympic-best time in the heats.

Sara Hendershot of Simsbury, Conn. and partner Sarah Zelenka finished fourth.
