STORRS, Conn. (AP) - The University of Connecticut will honor five members of its women's basketball team and three members of the men's team for their achievements in the classroom.
They are among 346 UConn student athletes who achieved grade-point averages of 3.0 or above during the fall semester.
A ceremony noting that accomplishment will take place during halftime of Saturday's women's game against Georgetown.
UConn women's coach Geno Auriemma says his squad has been competing with each other this season for good grades.
The squad split itself into three academic teams.. A team led by guard Caroline Doty came out on top during the first semester.
The ceremony will be held a day after the NCAA turned down Connecticut's request for a waiver that would allow its men's basketball team to play in the 2013 national championship tournament. UConn doesn't qualify for the tournament because of below-standard academic results.
