Bronx, NY (WTNH) - Kemba Walker has been all over the country exciting basketball fans as he led UConn to the national championship, but on Wednesday night he was back home.
The UConn Huskies championship team was in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium, and Walker got to throw out the first pitch.
They emptied the bus ready to support their teammate, but the Yankees? Not everyone was cheering for them.
Roscoe Smith, who is from Baltimore, wore his Orioles hat. Alex Oriakhi, who is from Massachusetts, pointed to his Red Sox hat and said "I'm doing it!" He's a brave man.
"You know, the Red Sox are my team. I'm from Massachusetts, so I just wanted to represent," Oriakhi said.
The Huskies were the Yankees guests, and they got the championship treatment. Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and Alex Rodriguez all made them feel at home.
Even the Orioles fan had something to say...
"I never imagined or pictured myself in a New York Yankees suite, talking to Derek Jeter, and meeting A-Rod, and all the greats," said Roscoe Smith.
"I'm here at Yankee Stadium, you know, in the Bronx where I grew up. Throwing the first pitch is like a movie," Kemba Walker said.
The whole UConn team was recognized, but Kemba Walker was the headliner. The kid who grew up 15 minutes from the stadium was there to throw out the first pitch.
When asked if his knees were knocking from being nervous, Walked laughed and said, "I was definitely nervous."
He took the mound to cheers. Walker delivered one more time.
A strike? Well that depends who you ask.
"When I threw it I thought it was going to be short, but he [catcher Russell Martin] caught it. He went after it, and he saved me," Walker said.
"You know, he could have put a little more mustard on it, but it was alright. It was alright," Oriakhi said.
After an action-packed pre-game, the Huskies made their way into their seats. The National Champions settled in to watch the 27-time World Champions.
