Storrs (WTNH) - The baseball team had another good season at J.O. Christian Field, but no matter how this season ends the Huskies have developed some really good young talent. Outfielder George Springer is not only the best freshman on the team, he may be the best player.

"His last name is perfect," said head coach Jim Penders. "You know, Springer. It epitomizes what's in there. He's got great spring to his game, he's got great spring to his personality."

George Springer III is a smart kid, but he doesn't think much when comes to baseball.

"Swing hard and hit it on a line," explained Springer.

Springer has become UConn's big swinger, and he's only a freshman.

"Just kind of get in the box and go up there and swing, and whatever happens happens," said Springer.

Springer just broke the Husky freshman mark for most home runs in a season.

"He's pretty much leading the team in hitting, he's leading the team in home runs, runs scored, RBIs; he's been a force to be reckoned with," said Penders.

Penders bats Springer 4th, in the clean up spot- an honor for any player, let alone a freshman.

"It's also a ton of pressure, 'cause you get that guy on, I'm the one who has to get him in, cause that's my job hitting 4," said Springer.

Springer is among the best in the Big East. The Minnesota Twins drafted him out of high school.

"That whole process was special to me because there's only 1,500 kids who get drafted every year," said Springer.

Springer passed on the offer, even though the Twins double A team-- the New Britain Rockcats-- are based in his hometown.

The way this history major sees it, Connecticut was the perfect fit. His dad played ball there, and his mom was a UConn gymnast.

"In my heart I knew this was the place I wanted to go," said Springer.

In Storrs, Springer is a big hit for his play, personality, and extra bounce in his step.
