Hartford, Conn. (AP) - Cincinnati, Marquette, Syracuse and Louisville were all winners in the first round of the Big East women's basketball tournament.
Kahla Roudebush scored 19 points as Cincinnati beat South Florida 63-51. Shareese Ulis had 17 points and Shanasa Sanders added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Bearcats (12-17) who advanced to play Rutgers in the tournament's second round on Saturday.
The Connecticut crowd threw its support behind Cincinnati, which is coached by former UConn star Jamelle Elliott.
Sarina Simmons scored 13 points as Marquette held off Villanova 53-49. Jessica Pachko added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles (16-14). Marquette led by as many as 11 points early in the second half, before Villanova made a run.
Marquette, the tournament's tenth seed, will play seventh seeded DePaul in the second round on Saturday.
Erica Morrow scored 18 points as Syracuse beat Seton Hall 65-42. Juanita Ward added 16 points and nine rebounds for the ninth-seeded Orange (21-9), who play Providence on Saturday. Kandice Green had 12 points for Seton Hall, which finishes its season 9-21. The Orange played without Nicole Michael, the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, who injured her right foot on Monday. Michael dressed on Friday, but did not play. Coach Quentin Hillsman said she would try again Saturday.
Louisville sophomore forward Monique Reid scored a game-high 32 points to lead the Cardinals in a 79-71 win over Pittsburgh. With the win Louisville advances to play No. 5 seed Notre Dame on Saturday.
