STORRS, Conn. (WTNH) -- It appears we have seen the last of UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun on the sidelines. The Hall of Fame coach is expected announce that he's stepping down at a news conference on campus Thursday afternoon.
You don't have to be a basketball fan to understand the role Jim Calhoun has had in the state.
While building a national basketball powerhouse, he brought all sorts of exposure to Connecticut.
And now it appears, after 26 years in Storrs, he'll hang up the whistle.
He does so after winning three national championships and 873 wins: the 6th most in the history of the game.
Calhoun, who is 70, has had some health issues, and is a three-time cancer survivor. And just recently he suffered a fractured hip after a cycling accident.
It's expected that his assistant and former player, Kevin Ollie will be the next UConn head coach.
Calhoun has had a major impact on the UConn community as a whole and word of his retirement is now reaching students.
News 8's Annie Rourke visited the Storrs campus Wednesday night to find out what students are saying.
