HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Irish just seem to be able to take the Huskies out of their game. Notre Dame has owned UConn, beating the Huskies 3 times this year including tonight in the Big East tournament championship game, a game UConn had a chance to win.
UConn fought back from a 6 point defecit with 3 minutes to go.
Bria Hartly had a steal and shot to bring Huskies to within 2.
Then Dolson got the ball in the post and tied it up at 59.
With less than 20 seconds to go, the Huskies had the ball and a chance to win but they appeared anything but composed.
They frantically threw the ball away and left Notre Dame just enough time to score the game winner.
The final score of the game was 61-59.
News 8's John Pierson was there for all the drama.
"It means a lot, it means a lot. I mean coach never had one and this was her last opportunity to get one and I thought it was our defense tonight. You know, they were 0 for 5 from 3's. The first time in 11 years or something like that, they hadn't made a 3 point shot," said Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins, Tournament MVP.
"Who wouldn't be mad after a lose. Obviously, you know, we're all upset and you know crying but ultimately you're just angry," said UConn's Stephanie Dolson.
"This was my last shot so it sucks. I mean, it does and to lose on a last second shot, when we had the ball with no shot clock," said UConn's Kelly Faris.
"I think each of us need to be confident and go, like if we're trying to win a game, you gotta step up and be aggressive and make that shot or at least take the shot. We didn't even get a shot," said UConn's Bria Hartley.
