Storrs, CT (WTNH) - UConn football player Nick Williams says he roots for the little guy, the underdog, as he should, afterall, he is one himself.
Though Williams is small by football standards, standing at about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 185 lbs, that hasn't prevented him from becoming UConn's big play guy.
"It seems like there's hope and there's opportunity for these Nick Williams of the world," said head football coach Paul Pasqualoni, "who aren't the biggest guys, but they're pretty feisty."
This could never be more evident than in Saturday's win over Buffalo, when Williams turned a short reception into a 49-yard touchdown play.
"I'm hoping to look to build off this in coming games and be a little bit more involved and have a larger role in the offense," said Williams.
Williams has made big plays for the Huskies before, but on special teams. You have to figure they'll look to get him the ball more from scrimmage now. In fact he's been asking for it for awhile, especially to his quarterback, Johnny Mcentee, who has to listen as he is Williams' roommate.
"I knew he could do it, he's always telling me in the room, just get me the ball, just get me the ball. I'm like alright alright, you're time will come," Mcentee said. "Yeah, I'm never gonna hear the end of it now."
"Oh yeah, I was just giving him a little bit, but that's just because he's a roommate and a good friend of mine but yeah, I kind of mess with him in the room," said Williams.
And if the UConn coaches have their way, there will be a lot more of that between the roomates.
"Yeah, I'm gonna try to get him the ball a little more," said Mcentee. "He's always been a big playmkaer for UConn, kick returning or whatever he's doing, he's always out there giving 100 percent."
