STORRS, Conn. (WTNH) -- Jonathan the Husky has changed over the years but he is about to change again. A meaner or more menacing mascot? News 8 headed to the UConn campus to try to find out what this is all about.
"Did you guys get a look at it," asked News 8's Tina Detelj.
"No we haven't seen it yet," said two students.
To get the scoop on the mascot make-over we asked the women and men in blue, UConn blue.
"I'm a coach," said one man walking by.
"Oh you're a coach? Can we ask you a question," asked News 8's Tina Detelj.
"Sorry," said the coach.
It was reportedly a volleyball player who told the Daily Campus the new Husky has slanted eyes, a more aggressive stare.
"You don't want to other teams to think you're soft because you have a friendly Husky dog as your logo," said Senior Kevin Gately.
"Maybe get people more pumped up to be like yeah we are the Huskies. Not just like a woof but like a woof," said Sophomore Michelle Dalena.
But will its bark be worse than the teams' bite?
"Is it going to help you guys play a little better," asked News 8's Tina Detelj.
"Maybe. Maybe people will be afraid of our new logo, our new mascot," said Basketball Player Tyler Orlander.
News 8 did speak with Mike Enright with the athletics department and he confirmed that they are looking at rebranding the logo. He wouldn't give us any sneak peak as to what it would look like but we did notice a new banner hanging on campus. Maybe that gave us a hint as to what the new husky might look like.
The mascot has changed over the years but his guy has been around since the mid 90's.
"I do kind of see that's a little more like too playful, not necessarily like get in the game," said Senior Adrea Mandragouras.
But they still want a Jonathan they can literally embrace.
"Everyone loves hugging Jonathan no matter how old you are," said Sophomore Rachel Adams.
We are told a look at the mascot makeover will be released sometime in April or May but you can be sure if we get a look at it before then we'll show you too.
This may be hard to believe in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, but an annual …
