Storrs, Conn (WTNH) - UConn nation certainly made sure its triumphant heroes understood the appreciation Tuesday.
More than 6,000 fans poured into Gampel Pavilion for a welcome home rally Tuesday afternoon. The party from Monday night just carried over to Tuesday.
"I knew the moment they said they were going to do this that I would be there. I wasn't going to miss it," said UConn Junior Becky Piper.
"It was great. To have this after what they have gone through, it was great," Senior Andrew Mantiona said.
Each player was met with a loud ovation during the introductions, and as you can imagine, the roar was thunderous when Kemba Walker appeared carrying the NCAA championship trophy.
Walker was brought to tears during the surprise unveiling of his name and number entering the Huskies Honor Roll.
"It's crazy. I had no idea this was going to happen. It was very emotional," Walker said.
"This is a special team. They all are, but this one will go down as one of the most special and unique teams in the history of the NCAA tournament," Coach Jim Calhoun said.
A quick trip to greet fans around the perimeter of the arena was longer for some, who were immersed in enthusiasm and joy.
There was a marriage proposal for Walker. Maybe he can fit that in while playing in the NBA. I can't tell you what will happen in his future, but I can tell you that this year, because of Walker, it will be a season to remember.
