WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) — Waterbury police say one person died and two others were injured when their SUV hit a utility pole and rolled over several times.

Acting Deputy Police Chief Chris Corbett says the accident happened on Meadow Street just before midnight Monday.

Corbett says a passenger in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene. He says the driver and a front seat passenger are being treated for non-life threatening injuries at St. Mary's Hospital.

Police are withholding the victims' names until after their families are notified.

Corbett says excessive speed appears to be the primary cause of the crash.
