MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A car collided with an ambulance and the impact left the ambulance on it's side Sunday afternoon.
The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. Sunday on Washington Street at Old Mill Road in Middletown.
According to police, the ambulance, which was driven by Sean Piscopiello was traveling west on Route 66, when a car driven by John Lewis Sr was attempting to turn left onto Old Mill Road off of Route 66 hit the right side of the ambulance. After the contact, the ambulance rolled onto its left side.
Piscopiello and the front seat passenger of the ambulance, Timothy Cormier, were transported to Hartford Hospital after the crash, where they were treated and released. Lewis was also transported to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries.
One witness said that the crash was very loud and could be heard from quite a distance away.
"Like thunder, like a big boom. That's why I kind of jumped, you know," said Jim Hurlbut, a witness to the crash. "It made a loud noise, even the streets [blocks away] could hear it."
HAZMAT crews rushed to the scene to clean diesel up that leaked out of the ambulance.
Officials are still investigating the exact cause of the accident.
