LEDYARD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Utility crews are repairing a damaged telephone pole, as a result of an overnight accident, police say. The intersection remains closed for most of the day.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday, police were notified that a vehicle struck a pole at the intersection of Long Cove and Christy Hill.

Igor Ponts, 27, drove a 2004 Lincoln into a pole with live wires, causing it to fall. As a result of the damage, nearly 1,000 Ledyard residents were without power at one time.

Ponts was arrested and charged with Evading Responsibility, Operating Without a Motor Vehicle Without a License and Operating a Motor Vehicles Without Insurance.

Power has since been returned to all residents.
