AVON, Conn. (AP) — Department of Motor Vehicle officials say the 16-year-old driver in a crash in Avon that injured him and two passengers only had a learner's permit and was prohibited from having anyone else in the car, except a parent or driving instructor.

Officials identified the driver in Wednesday night's crash as Gary Wright of Canton. Police say the car he was driving nearly broke in half when it hit a utility pole and caused dozens of power outages.

Wright remains hospitalized in critical condition. One of his passengers, 19-year-old Michael Follert of Avon, is in stable condition at a hospital and the other, 18-year-old Frank O'Connor of Avon, has been discharged from a hospital.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Police are deciding whether to file criminal charges.
