Car in water off Merritt leaves one person dead

GREENWICH, Conn. (WTNH) -- One person has died following an accident involving a car in the water off the Merritt Parkway, officials said.

The Greenwich Fire Department reported via Twitter that the accident involved an overturned vehicle between Exits 28 and 27.

News 8 has also learned that at least one occupant from the vehicle was extricated after it ended up under water.

Police confirmed that the accident was fatal.

The incident had caused major delays Wednesday morning as a portion of the Parkway was closed.
