NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) -- A man was taken to the hospital after being struck and pinned beneath a vehicle in Norwalk Monday.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m., in the area of 55 East Avenue.

Upon arrival, crews found a man in his 30's pinned under a GMC Safari van on the sidewalk.

Officials said the victim's head was pinned near the passenger side front wheel, but luckily the tire wasn't resting on his head.

According to the Fire Department, the vehicle went on to the sidewalk and then pinned the man after being struck.

The victim was conscious the whole time, but suffered severe head lacerations.

Officials said the sidewalk is slightly angled, leaving space between the victim and the vehicle.

A firefighter stayed under the vehicle with the victim while the van was lifted off him.

After the victim was pulled out he was given IV's and transported to Norwalk Hospital.

The driver was an elderly man.

The identities of the victim and the driver have not yet been released.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident.
