NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A section of Route 5 in North Haven was closed for a few hours early Thursday after a truck carrying diesel fuel overturned and spilled a lot of its cargo.
The truck was coming down Defco Park Road a little after 2:00 a.m. carrying a full load of about 2,500 gallons of diesel when the driver lost control and the truck crashed.
The fuel spilled into a storm drain.
Route 5, also known as Washington Ave. in that area, was closed from Bradley Street to Scrub Oak Road until about 6:30 a.m., when the truck was removed and the road was reopened.
However, officials said there could in intermittent lane closures in the area throughout the day.
Workers from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are on the scene looking at the damage and where the spilled fuel might flow..
In a news release the North Haven Fire Department said "Area businesses and residences may experience the presence of fuel odor in the airthrough the morning, however an environmental contractor and DEEP will remain on scene throughout the day ensuring the fuel is cleaned thoroughly."
The driver was not hurt. He stayed at the scene to talk with authorities.
