NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- The bridge may now be open to traffic, but that doesn't mean it's smooth sailing for traffic.

The DOT is rolling out a series of lane and exit closures as they rerout traffic onto the bridge.

Most of the rerouting is done, but lingering delays are expected through Sunday morning.

Below is a list of closures and changes as explained by ConnDOT :

  • The Long Wharf Drive on-ramp to I-95 NB is scheduled to be closed and detoured 8 PM Friday, June 22nd, through 8 AM Saturday. .pdf map
  • A continuous right hand lane closure on I-95 NB, between Exit 46(Long Wharf Drive) and Exit 50 (Woodward Avenue), is scheduled to occur 8 PM Friday, June 22nd, through 8 AM Saturday, June 23rd. I-91 SB Traffic Destined for I-95 NB, Exit 50 (Woodward Avenue/ Port Area)

  • I-91 SB traffic destined for I-95 NB, Exit 50 will not have access to Woodward Avenue/Port Area (Exit 50) from 8 PM Friday, June 22nd until after 6 PM Saturday, June 23rd. .pdf map

Route 34 EB ramp to I-95 NB

  • Intermittent 10 minute traffic stoppages will occur on the Route 34 EB ramp to I-95 NB from 8 PM Friday, June 22nd until 8 AM Saturday, June 23rd. .pdf map

Southbound I-95 traffic will continue to use the existing bridge, but eventually they will be moved to the new bridge, the old bridge will be demolished, and a new southbound span will be built in its place. That is expected to take a few more years to complete.

The old structure is more than 50 years old, and carries more traffic than it was designed to handle.
