DOT: no money for Interstate 84 widening

    Waterbury (AP) - Connecticut officials say budget problems have forced them to delay the final phase of an Interstate 84 widening project between Southington and Waterbury indefinitely.

    The widening of the highway between Austin Road and Hamilton Avenue in Waterbury was supposed to begin last spring, but Department of Transportation officials say the agency doesn't have the $300 million to pay for the project.

    DOT Commissioner Joseph Marie and other agency officials met Tuesday with U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy and other state and local officials. He could not offer a specific date for when the project would move forward, but says it will be done at some point.

    The project is designed to reduce traffic congestion and remove a dangerous curve that limits visibility.
