New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - Debris on the road hit a tractor trailer and forced the closure of I-95 North at the bottom of the Pearl Harbor Memorial/Q-Bridge for a couple of hours Friday.
The incident happened at Exit 50, the Woodward Ave. exit, going from New Haven into East Haven.
According to state police, a tractor trailer traveling in the right hand lane struck a large piece of metal that was in the highway. The metal cut open the truck's left side saddle tank.
After it was hit by the truck, the metal landed in the left lane, where it was struck by an SUV driven by a New York man. Three others were in the SUV.
The tractor trailer spilled an estimated 150-200 gallons of diesel. The highway was closed and traffic was taken off the highway at Exit 50 so emergency crews could deal with the wreck and the spilled fuel.
Traffic was allowed back on the highway around the crash scene shortly before 7:00 a.m., and was fully reopened around 7:30.
The SUV pulled off the highway at Exit 51 to await police, troopers said.
No one in either vehicle was injured.
State police do not know where the piece of metal came from.
