Milford, Conn. (WTNH) - A multi-truck crash that spilled liquid latex and diesel fuel closed a section of I-95 in Milford for several hours Monday, and sent two truck drivers to the hospital.

The crash happened just before 5:00 a.m. in the Northbound lanes of I-95 in Milford between Exits 40 and 41, near the entrance to the rest area.

According to Milford authorities the accident involved three tractor trailers. One truck collided into the rear of another truck which was carrying flammable latex, and some of that latex spilled.

About 150 gallons of diesel fuel also spilled, officials said.

The accident started when a Ryder rental truck being driven by a Pennsylvania man was stopped for traffic in the Middle lane just south of Exit 41, police said. A second Ryder truck stopped behind the first. It was struck by a tractor trailer, which in turn hit the first truck.

Rescuers had to use the jaws of live to free one of the drivers, who was pinned his truck for about 15 minutes. He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Traffic was diverted off the highway at Exit 40 onto surface streets for several hours, causing extensive delays on the highway.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation initially expected it to take up to three hours to clear, but the interstate was not fully reopened until after 9:00 a.m.

Another driver was transported to YNNH for minor back injuries, authorities said.
