Stamford, Conn. (WTNH) - Bus service continues on the Metro-North's New Canaan branch after a train and car collided during the Noon hour Tuesday.

Stamford Police tell News 8 it happened on Riverbend Drive South shortly after noon. That's south of the Springdale train station.

The driver was 80-year-old Theresa Apruzzese. She was rushed to Stamford Hospital's ICU after her car was struck by a Metro-North New Canaan branch train. A nearby AT&T worker and his colleague heard the crash and raced over to help. They were the first on the scene.

Rich Thomas said, "I was able to just hold her shoulder lightly, until paramedics showed up."

The AT&T worker says every part of the woman's car was crushed except for the driver's side.

Thomas says it's a miracle the woman was conscious and talking to emergency responders on the scene.

Metro North had to bus passengers on the New Canaan branch for 3 hours after the crash.

There are no gates at that crossing. It is unclear if the lights were operating at the time, the Stamford Advocate reported.

The MTA says "bus service is currently being provided on the New Canaan Branch until further notice...."

Officials are now investigating the incident.

No charges were filed, but Apruzzese's driver's license was confiscated.
