High temps moves summer camp indoors

Branford, Conn. (WTNH) - The heat and humidity forced a summer camp in Branford indoors to keep the kids safe from heat exhaustion.

There are 240 kids enrolled at the Soundview Family YMCA summer camp. Normally, they would be outside, but with temperatures soaring into the 90s, and the humidity making it feel even hotter, the kids are inside.

"Outside we do a lot of fun activities, but it gets really hot after awhile, so it's nice to be in the A/C now," said Paul Proto of North Branford.

Kids can play pool, hockey and go for a swim in the brand-new facility that doesn't even open to members until next week. The camp's director, Megan Kilbridge, says the indoor options make concerned parents feel better.

"There is a plan in place, that's what we always tell them. The kids' safety is first and we are well aware of it and we assure them that we have planned down time and scheduled indoor time so the kids aren't getting overheated," she said.

Small groups of kids will spend a little time outdoors, if it's not too bad, but always with their water bottles within reach.

"It's water, water, water, water," Kilbride said.

As happy as they are to have the new building to go inside when it gets too hot, or when there are thunderstorms, this is still a summer camp and they'd like to spend a little more time outside.
