Hartford (WTNH) - Gov. Jodi Rell is asking the federal government for aid following a tornado Friday in Wethersfield.

An EF-1 tornado touched down in Wethersfield late Friday afternoon, packing winds up to 90 mph. Extensive damage was done to houses, cars and power lines.

"The devastation in some of these neighborhoods was absolutely staggering. Fortunately, it was a real miracle that there was no loss of life or serious injuries and for that we can all be grateful," said Governor Rell in a written statement. "Property owners now have to begin putting their lives back together and my administration will do everything we can to help them."

Friday's storm also made a mess in Farmington where wind and hail pulled down trees onto power lines.

Rell toured Wethersfield Saturday to get a first-hand look at the damage.
