Wethersfield (WTNH) - An emergency shelter in Wethersfield is opened to those who need shelter due to the storm.

The shelter, located at Greenfield School, 30 Greenfield Street, opened at 8 p.m. after many homes were structurally damaged by falling trees due to severe weather, Wethersfield Fire Department said.

Citizens needing emergency shelter due to damaged homes or having health issues are asked to report to the Greenfield School.

The fire department warms citizens to use extreme caution during this situation. They ask the following:

  • If a building has been hit by a tree and is structurally damaged, leave the building and call police immediately
  • Candles are dangerous ways to light homes during power outages, do not leave candles unattended
  • Stay away from power lines - treat all power lines as if they are electrically charged
  • Stay off roadways unless it is an emergency - roads have wires down on them
