(WTNH) -- Severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon have dropped large hail across a large chunk of Connecticut.
A particularly severe hail storm developed near the New York border in the town of Sharon. The storm proceeded to pass towards the south and east.
The worst of the hail came in and around the Waterbury and Watertown areas, where there were many reports of golf ball and larger sized hail.
As of 6:30 p.m. Sunday, 9,357 customers across the state are without power. The majority of those outages are from the hail storm. Strong winds caused trees to fall on some power lines, contributing to the outages.
At one point around 5 p.m. approximately 12,000 residents were without power.
