Six homes gone in Cosey Beach

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Superstorm Sandy took out six houses in the Cosey Beach section of East Haven, an area hard hit a year ago by Irene. And Sandy will also likely scare away Halloween.

Through it all, there are no reports of injuries.

Town officials said two homes collapsed in the storm and another four we so badly damaged they were labeled a total loss.

Mayor Joseph Maturo said along the three mile stretch of East Haven's coastline every single home sustained some sort of damage. They're seeing a range from blown off shingles to cracked foundations. Many beautiful green yards were eroded away and the Sound left feet of sandy sludge in it's wake.

"It's a mess," said East Haven homeowner Rita Mustakos. "The front of the house is washed through. Pilings are off the house. They have to be repaired."

Despite the loss ofhomes, Fire Chief Doug Jackson said this storm was in nowhere the same league as Irene. While the water rose two feet higher, this time around the wind was not as strong so the waves were not as forceful.

Based on what was learned during the response to Tropical Storm Irene the National Guard was called in for added security this time around.

"That alone, the presence of seeing the military patrolling the streets, benefits the community tremendously," said Mayor Maturo. "It also gave the people that wanted to evacuate a little assurance that when they did leave their home that they were going to have protection, and that is something that they were afraid of last year."

For now only residents are being allowed in the area There is a 7:00 pm curfew.

As for school on Wednesday, Mayor Maturo says that's not likely to happen.

And as for Halloween, Mayor Maturo said it doesn't look like kids should be trick-or-treating on Wednesday. He said it would be too dangerous in the dark with trees and power lines down.
