FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Fairfield officials are deploying huge pumps to drain flood waters from superstorm Sandy that inundated the beach area with so much water some residents were using kayaks.
Fairfield First Selectman Michael Tetreau estimated 1,500 to 2,000 homes were flooded. Major roads were flooded with several feet of water.
Officials brought in the pumps Wednesday to remove water from streets back into Long Island Sound. They were hoping most of the flooding would be removed in the next day or two so evacuated residents could return to their homes.
The water was so high that some residents were using kayaks and canoes to reach their homes.
Once the water recedes, officials say each home has to be checked to see if it's safe to turn electricity back on.
