Gov to check storm damage in southeast Connecticut

POMFRET, Conn. (WTNH/AP) - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is visiting southeastern Connecticut for a closer look at damage from Tropical Storm Irene.

Malloy has scheduled stops Wednesday in Pomfret, Sprague and Ledyard where he plans to check in on local recovery efforts.

At one time, 25 roads in Pomfret were closed. It's down to just four now, but the town remains isolated with no power, no cell service, no internet, and no 911.

There is a generator at the Pomfret Senior Center, so area residents are coming in to cool off, get something to eat, and charge their cell phones, but it was clear from the reception that the Governor got that people are getting tired of the isolation.

WINY AM Radio in Putnam is just about the only way to get information to residents who have a battery operated AM radio.

In Sprague, the first selectwoman says she's having problems communicating with CL&P.

The southeastern coast felt the brunt of the storm's 60 mph winds when it hit Connecticut on Sunday. In many towns in the region, 80 percent or more of the population was without power late Tuesday.

Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman is planning to visit storm-damaged areas in Guilford, Bristol, Southbury and New Milford on Wednesday.
