NEW LONDON, Conn. -- News 8 spoke with Mayor Daryl Finizio about road closures and what the city is doing to prepare for the storm.
"Flooding has begun throughout the waterfront and on the south end of the city," Mayor Finizio said.
The mayor said the seawall has been breached in numerous places.
The surge predicted for tonight at 10 p.m. is an 8.8 storm surge and the high tide is a full moon high tide, so there will be significant amounts of water entering the city.
A Mandatory evacuation was set for all low lying areas and a shelter is open at Winthrop School at 74 Grove Street.
A couple thousand residents have been relocated -- Category 1, 2, and 3 flash zones under the FEMA map were evacuated.
Police officers will be down by the water and arrests will be made if people do not leave the water front areas, Mayor Finizio said.
The mayor said all hands are on deck and they are treating this as a worst case scenario.
