Planes taking off, landing at Sikorsky after Sandy

STRATFORD, Conn. (AP) — Planes are taking off and landing again at the Igor I. Sikorsky Memorial Airport, but it could be several weeks before all lighting and navigation gear damaged in Superstorm Sandy is repaired.

Airport Manager John Ricci told the Connecticut Post that both runways were underwater immediately after the storm. He says two of the three navigational aids remain down.

The runway illumination lights also are out on one of Sikorsky's two runways due to salt water damage.

However, not much pavement was damaged and flooding drained off quickly, leaving behind only a small pond.

Ricci said about a dozen of the 202 aircraft based at the airport were damaged beyond repair. He says the airport may lose some tenants.
