(WTNH) -- As the winds from super-storm Sandy pick up, the number of power outages affecting Connecticut residents increases.

As of 2:35, more than 38,546 Connecticut Light & Power customers were without electricity, the outages scattered throughout the state.

United Illuminating, which serves the shoreline, had more than 8,000 customers without power.

Officials from both companies have said the storm could result in more than half of their customers losing power.

UI had another scare this morning when rising flood waters threatened a substation. There were fears the substation would have to be de-energized, but that didn't happen when the wind changed and the waters started to reced.
