(WTNH) - The National Weather Service issued a TORNADO WARNING for parts of Southern Connecticut Saturday night, but there were no immediate reports a tornado touched ground.
There have been reports of flooding in several towns, but no other serious damage.
Connecticut Light & Power reported more than 7,100 power outages earlier in the evening, mostly in the Watertown and Waterbury area, but those numbers were down into the hundreds a few hours later.
United Illuminating reported about 900 outages at its worst, most of them in Trumbull.
Rainfall rates of one to two inches an hour were reported as the system moved to the North/Northeast through the state.
In Naugatuck, the rain-water came down quickly and so heavily a sewer line backed up into one home on Goodyear Ave., leaving a huge mess inside.
"It's awful, I don't even know how to explain it," Gail Connelly said. "Everything is ruined; shoes, clothes, furniture, whatever."
Connelly said heavy downpours in the past have also led to similar problems for them.
The tornado warning was in effect from about 5:13 until 6:00 p.m. for South Central New Haven and Fairfield Counties.
"When a tornado warning is issued based on doppler radar it means that strong rotation has been detected in the storm," a National Weather Service alert said. "A tornado may already be on the ground or is expected to develop shortly."
Shortly before 6:00 p.m. the weather service said the storm cell they were tracking had weakened and did not appear to be capable of producing a tornado.
