NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating met their power restoration goal to have 95% or more of their customers back on, but for people still without power that means very little.

About 25,000 customers were without power as of this afternoon.

UI, which hit its 95% goal Sunday afternoon, has 6,200 customers without power, with Fairfield and Milford having the most outages.

"We hit our target," UI CEO Jim Torgerson said. "We said we would get 95 percent of our customers having power by the end of the day today. We actually hit that yesterday. By the end of the day today we should have 98 percent of our customers have power."

CL&P had more than 98% of their customers back Sunday evening. Lower Fairfield County towns including Greenwich, Stamford and New Canaan are where most of the outages remain, although scattered outages linger in many towns.

CL&P says more than 17,000 customers are still without power.

"We have achieved our goal on a state wide basis which was to reduce the number of customers with outages to less than 2 percent and that's something we are very proud of," Bill Quinlan of CL&P said.

With Election Day just a day away, most polling places will have electricity. If the power isn't restored to the building, generators will be there to provide the power.

Metro-North is back running trains on the Danbury and Waterbury Branches of the New Haven Line, but riders on the New Canaan Branch will find buses operating 15-minutes earlier than the train schedule.

Anyone who will be filing a disaster claim first needs to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, by calling 800-621-3362 or registering online at DisasterAssistance.gov .

There are now five FEMA Disaster Centers in Connecticut, in Greenwich, Bridgeport, New Haven, Old Saybrook and Groton.
