With many still out of power, utilities near their outage goals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- United Illuminating reached their goal of having 95% of their customers with electric service Sunday evening, one day earlier than they stated last week. Connecticut Light & Power was also near one of its stated goals.

As of 7:00 p.m. there were fewer than 50,000 total outages combined for the two major utilities.

UI was fractionally over their goal of 95%. The utility had said they expected to reach their restoration goal before 11:59 p.m. Monday.

CL&P has said they would have 98% back by Monday or Tuesday. They were at 97% Sunday evening.

"Many large area outages have been restored, and crews are diligently working to restore all customers," Bill Quinlan, CL&P Senior Vice President of Emergency Preparedness, said in a statement. "In some areas, this effort requires that entire sections of the electric distribution system be rebuilt from scratch."

Metro-North said it would be back running trains on the Danbury and Waterbury Branches of the New Haven Line on Monday, but that New Canaan Branch riders would be on buses that will operate 20-minutes earlier than the train schedule.

Subway service is not yet fully restored in Manhattan. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said it's not going to be a normal commute Monday.

Anyone who will be filing a disaster claim first needs to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, by calling 800-621-3362 or registering online at DisasterAssistance.gov .

There are now five FEMA Disaster Centers in Connecticut, in Greenwich, Bridgeport, New Haven, Old Saybrook and Groton.
