NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- With temperatures expected to get into the 40s in places today, this will be a good day to dig out those cars stuck in the snow.
"Today's the day, because tonight everything freezes up solid," Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Gil Simmons said.
Temperatures were near freezing statewide at 5:00 a.m., but for the first time in several days there are no severe weather advisories in effect.
Dozens of school districts remained closed, giving children and extended break from classes.
Cities and towns continue to make progress in removing snow from the streets. The City of New Haven hopes to have every street passable today. For the City of Bridgeport, clearing away all the snow may not happen until the weekend.
Yankee Gas and Connecticut Light & Power are providing heavy equipment -- plows and backhoes -- to help the cities of Meriden, Waterbury and Hartford clear snow.
For commuters looking to get to work, caution is still the best advice. Highway driving conditions continue to improve, but high snow banks may make it difficult to see around local roads.
For rail commuters, Metro-North says it is close to regular service on from New Haven to South Norwalk. They are at 75% of peak service. However, the Waterbury branch remains suspended and there are no buses.
CTTransit says all Hartford-area express routes will be on a regular schedule today. Local service in Hartford, Meriden, New Britain, New Haven, Stamford and Waterbury will be on a regular schedule, assuming they can operate safely on the roads.
Greater Bridgeport Transit remains suspended this morning, but plans to resume some service at noon.
As for what's next; temperatures will drop and the snow that's out there will freeze. Some snow is in the forecast for Wednesday, but the accumulation amount looks to be decreasing. The shoreline is expected to receive the most smow, up to four inches.
