BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) -- Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said only 100 streets in the city are passable after the blizzard but secondary roads, the side streets most people live on, won't be cleared until later this week.
He says the city needs more help by way of contractors and equipment.
Gov. Malloy was in Bridgeport Monday afternoon and says the state is lending as many assets as it can to Bridgeport. He says there is equipment on its way from Illinois and Pennsylvania, as well as other states. He is hoping that will help with the snow removal process, a process many residents say they've found frustratingly slow. They say each day they're snowed in is costing them money.
"The last time we had this much snow was never and it's a problem. I think that the communities got overwhelmed and trying to move 30 inches of snow is pretty darn tough," said Gov. Malloy.
There are 800 road miles in city. Mayor Finch thinks they will get it all cleared by Sunday.
"Because people left their vehicles in the road, we're operating at about 50% proficiency because we have to go extricate a car," said Mayor Finch.
The superintendents biggest concern is schools. The superintendent ordered schools closed Monday and Tuesday but says it's likely they could be closed through next week which means kids will miss out on 6 days of school.
Next week is suppose to be February break but the superintendent has petitioned the teacher's union to take that break away so the kids don't miss anymore school.
The kids can't go back to school until the sidewalks are clear because many kids use them to walk to school.
Also, the Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority said its buses will not be running on Tuesday morning. Some service may resume Tuesday evening.
Below is a list of roads that are passable. While these roads are passable, a travel ban in the City of Bridgeport is still in effect. Please stay off of the roads until further notice.
