Getting out and getting stuck

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Many of the state's roads are still dangerous from the snow, the rain, and even freezing rain in places Monday.

From my perspective, not enough people took the day off, because the streets are way too crowded. Part of that is too many people thinking their car can beat this snow, and part of it is that all this snow makes every street a lot smaller.

Instead of painting houses in New York, Sylvester Arianas is stuck on a street in New Haven. We'll get back to him in a minute. The first business day after the big storm meant lots of trouble - starting with just getting the car out of the driveway.

"And we had to force all the family working hard just to get the one car out," said Joseph Adjei of New Haven.

Glen McFadden spent the weekend shoveling his driveway, but he's still not driving. "No, we're not even going to attempt it because I've seen everybody get stuck in this street, it's not worth it."

And now on top of all that snow we have rain that is freezing on the ground. It's tough on two feet, even tougher on four wheels. Especially when the lane in front of your four wheels completely disappears.

Maybe you thought of taking the bus? Well, a whole strong of CT Transit buses got stuck on Dixwell Avenue, backing up traffic. But walking is no better - because most of the sidewalks are still covered, which means people are walking in the steets. Although taking a bicylce didn't look like much fun either.

Which brings us back to cars and Sylvester the house painter. I did my best to push him, but it turns out he was just the latest to get stuck on this same block.

"Every time the cars start to come down they get stuck either at the beginning on the corner or right here in the middle, and we have to come get them out," Willie Thompson of New Haven said. "But once they get out, then another car comes along. Since last night, this is like the sixth car."

Willie and his friend Glen, plus photographer Joe and I finally got Sylvester un-stuck, but let that show you that it's just not worth it to drive if you don't have to.
