Snow days impact school calendar

NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) -- While kids love snow days, most won't love the fact that in many towns part of their vacation is history.

It's been a few days since News 8 ran into the Ricketts kids enjoying a blizzard break from school.

"We had Friday, then Saturday, then Sunday, then Monday, and now Tuesday," said Simon Ricketts.

Norwich Superintendent Abby Dolliver decided to give crews one more day to clean up streets and sidewalks before reopening schools.

"The streets were done okay, but not enough where I felt that kids had a place to wait," said Dolliver. "They can't stand on snowbanks, it's dark in the morning, and the buses couldn't navigate on some of our narrow streets."

By taking an extra day off the superintendent says she is a lot more confident the students will return to classes on Wednesday safely.

However, these snow days and the two days lost due to Superstorm Sandy have to be made up. Students will no longer have Feb 19th off, the day after Presidents' Day, and four days will be added to the end of the year moving the last day of school from June 14th to June 20th.

"At least we got a couple of days off and like a good sleep in after like playing in the snow. Yeah, it was really fun having days off," said Simon and Anna Ricketts.

"I think it's okay to make it up in June," said Kirk Ricketts, "as long as we don't have too many more snow days."

"It's fun to stay out in the snow a lot," said Emma Ricketts, "only comes a couple times a year."

"The thing that I worry about most is that parents have to miss work," Dolliver said.

Dolliver says any more snow days will be made up in June. She won't take away April vacation.
