INDIANAPOLIS - As you may remember, I’m working closely with Sola Adelowo and Imagecube this year to make the best Twinkle that ever did twinkle. And it’s time to level up.
In my first meeting with Sola at the beginning of February, I was able to “get” something through our in-depth chat over coffee that I’d been struggling with for a long while. I asked her this – How do I get over myself? How can I let go of the ego, the shyness or whatever it is holding me back to really allow me to be me?
"Image is not synonymous with vanity.”
That is Sola’s sage advice, the key idea I came away with from that meeting.
Even with all of the lifestyle advice I try to dispense, I’m not perfect, and that’s OK. Being the best self you can be isn’t about perfection and it’s definitely not about being who everyone else thinks you should be. It is about being the best you in every aspect.
We can fall victim to not recognizing the good in ourselves, and it can sometimes be difficult to say, “Hey, I am pretty amazing.”
One thing I’m learning to accept is that I am already pretty awesome, and one of my goals is to reach my full potential by learning to let go of my insecurities.
How do I do that? How does one just “let go?”
Start by setting a few realistic goals – long-term and short-term. Be honest with yourself and set some limits.
Next, meet those goals.
To help me start this process, I made three short-term goals. Try these out for yourselves or make your own set of three, and let me know how you are meeting them or not meeting them. Remember, this isn’t just about me making my life shine. You can do it, too.
Things to do now:
Goal time: Immediately
1. Wear more color – I love colorful clothing and accessories, but I tend to shy away from them out of habit. Instead of falling back on the standard blacks and grays, start small by adding a scarf or vibrant tights, then build up from there.
2. Buy new shoes – This is my favorite. When you have well-made, proper-fitting shoes, you are likely to be more comfortable, relaxed and ready to take on challenges. Also, it is a good way to treat yourself.
3. Get over it – Along with getting over any propensity to play it safe with your wardrobe, this statement applies to a lot more than just clothing. When we let our own personal drama go, and “get over it,” we can move forward on a positive path.
