NC voters consider same-sex marriage

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — With just weeks to go before voters in North Carolina decide whether to amend the state's constitution to block same-sex marriage, both sides are stepping up their mobilization efforts across the state.

Everyone from indie rockers to county commission members have gone public with their positions on the proposal, which would enshrine marriage between a man and a woman as the only valid definition in the state constitution.

Early voting begins Thursday, and that's when efforts to mobilize supporters are likely to kick into high gear.

David McLennan, a political science professor at William Peace University, says the most intense get-out-the-vote efforts are still to come. He says much of the mobilization so far has consisted of groups and individuals staking out positions on the issue.
