Carver Foundation of Norwalk provides a spectrum of highly individualized educational, enrichment, and recreational programs, as well as summer camp and spring and fall national college tours. Carver works with elementary to high school students throughout Norwalk. In addition to its community center, free after-school programs led by certified teachers and other qualified staff and volunteers are established within Norwalk’s four middle schools and two high schools. Carver provides tutoring in all subjects, hands-on science, assistance with the college application and financial aid process, and later busing so all youth can participate. CT has the largest Achievement Gap in the nation, which refers to the disparity on a number of educational measures between the performance of groups of students, especially groups defined by gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The achievement gap can be observed on a variety of measures, including standardized test scores, grade point average, dropout rates, and college-enrollment and -completion rates. Carver works to close the gap between privileged and under-privileged youth.
