In 1880, Gertrude O. Lewis, an 18-year-old Hartford High School senior founded the Connecticut Humane Society. The humane treatment of people and animals captured her concern. The Society is one of America’s oldest not-for-profit, privately funded and independent animal welfare organizations. Until 1965 we served as the only state-wide group offering protective services to children. We have continued to assist people as we shifted our primary focus to animal welfare. Over the years we have grown into a premier agency that has a reputation for setting the standards for animal care and welfare nation-wide.
