Closer to Free Bike Ride to benefit Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven is on September 8.

The dollars raised for the Closer to Free Ride will directly support patient care and research at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center.

Opened in 2009, Smilow Cancer Hospital treats more cancer patients than any other hospital in Connecticut. Within the state-of-the-art 14-story facility, the brightest minds in clinical research and patient care are developing new methods to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

Smilow Cancer Hospital’s revolutionary design is based on research which links architecture and environment as an essential partner in the healing process along with advanced medicine and care.

Every facet of the hospital was designed with the patient experience in mind: natural lighting, soaring atriums, improved ventilation and single-patient rooms. Plus numerous open spaces, soft colors, a curated artwork program, a rooftop healing garden and the most caring, compassionate and professional staff in medicine today.

Organized in 2011 by Yale-New Haven Hospital’s Office of Development, the Closer to Free bike ride will be an annual event to raise money for Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. The goal of the ride is two-fold: to raise money for Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven and create greater awareness for cancer care throughout Connecticut and Southern New England.

Today, YNHH is a 1,008-bed private, nonprofit teaching hospital that ranks among the premier medical centers in the nation. For the past three years, YNHH has been included among the Best Hospitals in the U.S. in the annual U.S.News & World Report ranking. Yale-New Haven is the largest acute care provider in southern Connecticut and one of the Northeast's major referral centers.

The inpatient buildings of Yale-New Haven Hospital are four pavilions around a central atrium. Yale-New Haven Hospital also includes the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital (formerly Yale Psychiatric Institute) and an ambulatory services division, with several satellite facilities including Temple Medical Center and the Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford.
