If you are anything like me, then your coffee maker is working overtime. Eventually, it's going to need a deep cleaning. But how do you safely clean it, and how often? There are some tips for that.
According to most manufacturers' instructions, drip filter coffee makers need to be cleaned monthly to remove hard water deposits, leftover coffee oils that become rancid, and other impurities.
So a quick rinse isn't going to cut it. There's plenty of internal components where rinsing isn't even applicable.
For better tasting coffee, as well as a cleaner coffeemaker, follow these tips:
To begin with, you'll want to drink or dump out any old coffee and toss any old grounds. If you have a reusable filter, this will also need to be cleaned.
Fill your carafe with one part white vinegar and two parts cold filtered (if possible) water. Pour into the coffee maker's reservoir.
Brew your vinegar/water mixture. Once you've run one batch through, let the vinegar/water mixture sit in the carafe for at least 15 minutes.
Dump the vinegar water and brew two consecutive batches of just filtered water. This is to eliminate any vinegar taste, so if you need to run another pot of water through, do so.
Don't forget the water filter! If your coffee maker has one, make sure it's changed every 2-3 months.
Do you have a machine that also grinds your beans? Make sure to remove the grinder parts that you can and soak in a vinegar water solution for about 30 minutes. This will take off any oily residue or old funky coffee grounds that tend to build up.
If you see any hard water build-up – that's the scaly, white residue – soak an old toothbrush in vinegar and gently scrub away.
Brew a pot and taste test!
