Autopsy performed on Thomas Ullmann

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - Former New Haven Chief Public Defender Thomas Ullmann has died.

He's best known for representing Steven Hayes in the Cheshire home invasion case.

The 67-year-old died Friday while hiking in New York's Adirondack Mountains.

His family reported him missing when he never returned.

Forest rangers found him dead on a ledge down a gorge wall.

An autopsy is being done to figure out how he died.

Ullmann headed the New Haven Public Defenders office for 25 years.

He retired from his job last August.
