Man shot outside of Waterbury courthouse

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police are investigating after a man was shot outside of Waterbury Superior Court late Tuesday morning.

Waterbury Deputy Chief Fernando Spagnolo confirms to News 8 that the shooting took place around 11:00 a.m. The victim, who police describe as a Hispanic man, was found near the entrance to a parking garage with a gunshot wound to his right leg. Officers say his wound was non-life threatening. His identity has not been released.

Police say the victim was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital for treatment.

The intersection of Field and Grand all the way down to the courthouse was closed for a short time while police investigated. They cleared the scene fairly quickly. That process included towing a white SUV that had several bullet holes in the windshield. It is not known if the vehicle was connected to either the shooter or the victim.

As of the filing of this report, there was no official description of the suspect.

We do know that Waterbury police think this was not random.

"This was not a random act of violence, this was a targeted incident," said Waterbury Deputy Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo. "We are currently interviewing witnesses to bring this case to a conclusion."

Anyone who witnessed this shooting or has any information that could help police in their investigation is asked to call Waterbury police at 203-574-6920.
