DANBURY, Conn. (WTNH)-- A Danbury man appeared in court Monday, for allegedly breaking into a senior housing complex and attacking an 85-year-old woman who lives there.
Police say the man is wanted in three states.
It's hard to imagine, someone targeting an elderly housing complex to steal from. Then, beating up an 85-year-old grandmother.
"I don't know. I'm very hurt, you know?" said Francisco Colon, a resident.
"She was a sweetheart. She'd always be sitting out there talking to everybody and you know he shouldn't have done this," said Carol Roos, a caregiver.
Carol Roos knows the victim and the man police say hurt her, 26-year-old Donny Jackson.
"I've known him all his life. His aunt and uncle brought him up and he was a good person until he got with the wrong people," said Roos.
Now, he's on mental health watch behind bars, held on a $1 million bond, and heroine detox.
On Saturday, police say Jackson forced his way into her apartment and attacked her. Hearing screams, a neighbor and child tried to help. They say he threatened them with a gun and left.
Several hours later, police put him in cuffs.
"It was tough. Very, very tough, everybody was worried and worried for the people that were hurt," said Susanna, a resident.
Monday, the Danbury Housing Authority property manager there met with residents about security. She declined to comment, but residents say changes are on the way.
"I feel safer than I did over the weekend," said Susanna. "They're going to implement a lot of new things that I feel really good about."
The Danbury housing authority did not return phone calls Monday.
Jackson is charged with burglar, assault, and home invasion. His next court date is September 26th.
